An update: My Closet is up for grabs

Hi loves,

Closet SM launched officially a few days ago, and I will be, in this post, laying down a few updates.

I have been asked ad nauseam, why I spend a fortune on clothing, jewellery, shoes and bags for as long as I can remember- why not put that money to Charity Sonal?

Well;

For the last decade, I have been around the world- not like Copernicus of yore – but I have been to places I hitherto admired on Pinterest.

And that has come with its fair share of shopping madness. I have closetfuls of stuff I no longer wear. And I keep getting more.  And will probably keep getting more.

It is stuff that still stands out. Stuff that still kicks. Stuff that Kylie would still rock to DC. Stuff that Sophia Vergara would still rock to Bora Bora. Stuff that Emily Ratajkowski would still rock to the Bahamas.  And stuff that you, my dear reader, can finally own- without breaking bank.

The responses from all of you who have made orders and shared very sweet and thoughtful messages on social media have been overwhelming.

I have gone through each of them. With a big smile on my face.

As we speak, I’m in Mumbai for work. Hauling pots and making sure that the next phase of the Sonal Maherali will be as stellar.

In the meantime, cure your shopping blues by heading over to Closetsm.com where you can pick items off my closet and sonalmaherali.shop   where you can pick out unique pieces from our just launched luxury line.

As always,

For the love of the culture: My Masai attire and the vibe behind it

As an Indian, I draw some cheeky pleasure in knowing that, even though I was born and brought up in Kenya, and I am thoroughly Kenyan, the Indian heritage in me still remains very much represented in Kenya by way of the magnificent Indian Ocean .

Cooling with girls in Diani about a week ago.

Cooling with the girls in Diani about a week ago.

The Indian Ocean, obviously, is one of Kenya’s biggest tourist attractions and I cannot resist the urge to hit the white shores every year for that much needed sun and sand and breezy sojourn.

And, for the last two weeks or so, I have been having a blast here. Surrounded by this massive mass of water from all sides, my legs nestled in the warm sand, my hair blowing away in the breeze and my mind totally blown.

And because I am as Kenyan as Ilhan Omar is American, I had to rock this uniquely Kenyan attire that is instantly recognizable from any corner of the Earth – The Maasai regalia.

I am a firm believer in heritage and carrying along one’s identity every where you go and since I am a Nairobian, in the City of the Swahili dishes, I had to let it be known that I am a proud Nairobian. To all that cared.

And thus, the unique Maasai attire that symbolizes the City of Nairobi.  A bit of history, Nairobi was named so by ancestral Maasais and the name is from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyrobi that loosely translates to ‘ Cool Waters’.

Unfortunately, the cool waters that the Maasai saw in Nairobi over a Century ago are no longer existent in the City under the Sun.

But at least, I am in the midst of not-so-cool waters. But massive blue waters, nonetheless.

And in memory of my City, I pay tribute to the Maasai culture, one of Africa’s most formidable and everlasting cultures, by rocking this indefatigable and inscrutable look.

Queen of the Cool Waters. In the coolest attire!

A white pants lookbook

Nothing screams confidence and sexy like a clean, crisp pair of white pants.

A lot of women are not very sure on how to go about white pants. Or even whether to buy them or not. I mean, they are dirt magnets, they tend to really accentuate every feature of your lower body (lumps and all) and can give you hell when deciding what color of undies to wear.

But what the hell??? These sexy things can be a girl’s best friend if you know when to wear them, why, what to wear them with and of course, what material works for you.

Look 1:  Girl-next-door

Nothing screams flirty like a well-matched pair of white pants. I would highly suggest this sort of look to go see Bae for a casual dinner hookup and bar-hop later in the night. This works perfectly for all settings. Bae will remain transfixed on you. And the boys the club will sure give you one too many thumbs ups. Too bad, you’re taken.

Look 2: The Wily Enchantress

Look scintillating in in white.  You cannot go wrong in fringe. Especially if its white and in leather. You cannot go wrong in pearls. And you can definitely not go wrong stepping out like you are about to start a war.  Charm your way up in white and walk into those meetings like they were a runway.

Look 3: Bellisima

A perfect opportunity to rock that flawless white pair of pants is when your girl, who you last saw at a drunken Rock concert three years ago, is back in town and wants to catch up over cocktails. You know she’s gonna be looking her best and you are not trying to upstage her.

Go for the white pants and this very minimalist top.  And these dramatic shoes. Of course, this Louis Vuitton belt will get her gawking at you and wondering what you do nowadays. But that’s a story for another day.

Look 4: A little play makes Joy happy. Haha

Sometimes its nice to look like you’re game. And ready for a little play. So, this certainly is the look. Unfortunately, this sort of look might get you attracting dirt like a toddler. But that depends with where you chose to go with it.

I would highly recommend that you don’t hit Ruaka (insert your local neighborhood)  looking like this! Not with these Christian Louboutin sneakers! Or Kitengela. Village Market ?? Of course!

Look 5: Boardroom bully

On a day when I am feeling all fierce and bossy, like, you know, Beyonce at a sold-out Concert, I will comfortably slip into my white pants and rock this fearlessly-sexy animal print top and kill it off with some sharp, ferocious high-heels. Louboutins , of course. This look may make your Uber driver drive much carefully and talk less. Cos, honey, you don’t look like you’ve got too much time for , ummm, idle small talk and bumpy rides.

Look 6: Denim Love

Going out for Martinis or your gin and tonic and snacks on a Saturday afternoon at any urban joint can be fun. And really relieving.

Perfect day to rock those white pants. Yes, you may be in for one hell of a rough time if you spill your drink allover yourself in this look. Cos the stains are pure social nightmares. But hey, if you look this sexy, complete with this delicious cardigan, you cannot be the type to be spilling drinks all over yourself now, are you ?

My favourite luxury Indian Sarees

I cannot think of a more gracious, genteel, decorous and elegant clothing, from any culture in the World, from any society in the World, than the age-defying, historic Saree worn by Indian women.

A woman’s body is made to be seen, appreciated, loved and marveled at, and what better way than to be graciously covered with the majesty and glory of a winding, sheeny clothing that exudes sheer beauty and nobility.

Like the Oceans across the World, that spread from the Australian Coasts to the Brazilian beaches, the Indian Sari drapes a woman with an unspeakable beauty and admirable gorgeousness leaving her looking like a wondrous work of Art. Worn Art.

Look 1 :   ‘The quiet morning of a thousand storms’

From head to toe, the decades-old clothing will leave you feeling like a reincarnated goddess, as the bejeweled attire flows over you with majesty and grace, head to toe, soft and pure.

Sonal Saree Lookbook 1

And from the back, it’s rare beauty leaves you glowing like an enchantress, as the perfect harmony between flawless skin and clothing sticks out with pride.

Look 2:  The overwhelming grandeur of an Indian queen

Like the Kamadhenu, the Indian goddess of plenty and fertility, the Sari elevates you and exalts you … Edifies you and honors you. Just as you so proudly deserve.

Sonal Saree Lookbook 3

Saree: Satya Paul , Necklace: Poetic trends Jewelry , Bangle: Beauty Art and Heels by Christian Louboutin

In it’s enduring glory and everlasting eminence, let this marvelous gown cover you with lushness and magnificence. Brilliance and jaw-dropping elegance.

Look 3: The soft cackling of the midnight sun

And because women are the crowning jewel on the face of Earth, this Jewel needs to shine bright and drip with color. It’s a jewel that needs to be seen and stand out. And the Sari never disappoints as it comes in all sizes, all fabrics, all colors. All enduring gloriousness.

Sonal Saree Lookbook 5

You’re a butterfly , Honey. And even Mariah Carey approves of this message. Sit pretty in your psychedelic Indian gown and let the butterfly in you fly through. Rest easy, let it all hang loose and let your colors shine bright. If not as bright as a diamond, at least, as this tempestuous noble garment.

Oh, the tears! My birthday and wedding Anniversary celebration

I celebrated my birthday and my wedding anniversary on Friday, March 15.

And it was terrific to say the least, like a scene straight out of a Christmas movie (Hello Vanessa Hudgens. lol)

I was supposed to be at home all day. I had just flown in from Mumbai a day earlier and was properly frazzled.

I knew the Mister had something up his sleeve of many colors- as usual- but this time, he really caught me off guard.

I had the assumption that we would be going out of town for the weekend, so on Friday, I decided to stay indoors and get my mojo back.

Not even a school errand that morning gave away what the Mister and my house manager were planning behind my back.

I returned to the house a few hours later to a delightful surprise; a bedroom of floating balloons, a cache of gifts that I will be showing you in a few and a smiling manager.

So lets get to it?

Some cute balloons in my closet that made me all teary.

Some cute balloons in my closet that made me all teary.

The thing with surprises is that they make you nervous- you know it is coming but you don’t know what to expect, or how to react.

Another batch of balloons floating away at my office.

And on this day, I had not idea what was in store, but again that is the beauty of it all; the candy store effect.

So there is a bunch of flowers for the birthday girl on the bed next to a cache of gifts lying close by..

I have received countless gifts in my life time but this year was special and the timing was right- pun intended- because he got me a Rolex! You guys!

I guess I have an excuse to get fashionably late now?

I guess I have an excuse to get fashionably late now?

And because it is not a proper Sonabration without cake, your girl got two because one is too cliché. One for the #39th birthday and the other one for the wedding anniversary because the arduous journey of love and marriage is marred by tempests and endless pitfalls. Haha!

A special cake because your girl has been loving Dior lately

Drum rolls please…

This is by far the most creative cake I have had and the attention to detail is award-worthy.

After I had the time to cry a little and say a prayer for the years past and the many to come, the Mister and I crowned the birthday Sonabration with a special dinner for two.

Oh and for those who were asking, I got to rock my fresh-off-the closet  YSL Opyum sandals- this cute golden dress that made me feel like I was part of a Greek movie and strung my Birkin on my arm for giggles. Lol.

We hit 50k Subscribers!

So, we just hit 50k subscribers!

You guessed right, the excitement is palpable!

Two years ago, I started this channel from a corner of my living room. It was a dream come true.

Zero subscribers.

My first video was Summer in London and to be totally honest, I had no idea what I had just started.

Youtube was a space where viewers were in a constant search for drama and kerfuffle and gossip. And I was here making videos about my Chanel bags. Haha!

I was quickly written off. A cadre of my now former friends said I was a spoilt housewife looking for an outlet to show my family wealth.
Such bitterness.

At some point, one of them who is still in the trenches as we speak said I was Trash. We shall be talking about that in a different post.

From my first video, I soldiered on, like a Haitian typhoon. Undeterred.

And along the way it has been bittersweet. Like a properly whipped Cinquecento.

And in those two short years I have seen my name dragged in the muck on some third-rate gossip low-budget websites.

Take it a notch higher this year, upstarts.

In those two years I have won a handful of awards and graced some of the biggest papers in town.

In those two years I have learnt a great deal and gotten better at it. New stuff is coming soon. I promise.

Although I’m still far from what I dream of becoming, I have made tremendous progress in my own right.

I’m sure there are guys who began the same time I did and have clocked 100k plus subscribers.

Atta boys and girls!

We are treading different waters.

A special thanks to the growing family. From here it can only get bigger and better.

I appreciate the criticism, the bile, the hate and the nonchalance.

After all, would there be diamonds without the heat and the pressure?

100k Subscribers is that you?

100k Subscribers is that you?
