A tall tale of my ten tattoos

Canadian writer Charles de Lint wrote in the Mystery of Grace that; tattoos are the stories of your heart, written on your skin.

And honestly, no one could have said it any better. I feel like mine have made my skin more “me”, by painting out things I felt about deeply.

And yes, they painful but some people derive certain odd comfort from the repeated stinging of the needle.

Lets get this rolling.

  1. The rose and the dagger

My first tattoo was on my left arm. A dalliance between a dagger and a rose. I was around 19 or 20 when I got it. I might have been drunk because I got it during a night out.

dagger

The dagger was indicative of the experiences I had been through, pain, heartbreak and depression. The rose was the sliver of hope. Beauty in chaos.

The interplay also means, rather aptly, that despite being feminine, I’m not here to play!

2. The pouncing Panther

The second one was a Panther that I got at Yaya Centre in Nairobi. It was largely about power. It is on my right shoulder.

Sis was Black Panther long before Wakanda forever!

It was at a time that I needed to remind myself that I would rise above the chaos that was my life at the time. And I did.

3. A number for my darling mother

My third one was on my left wrist, a Hindi equivalent of ‘mother’. It was around the time I got my fourth child and also around the time my mum was diagnosed with cancer.

A tough time. Stuff i’ll never forget.

4. My Guru

My fourth tattoo was inspired by my adherence to Shirdi Sai Baba. He did not believe in religion but humanity and his teachings are dear to my heart. It is on my right wrist and was done two years ago.

5.  A convenient one for the Mister

My fifth tattoo was done on my ring finger and rather conveniently, bore my husband’s pen name; AFM. It was done last year in October during his birthday when he flew to Mumbai where I was down for work.

AFM

6. A crown for the Queen

My sixth was a crown on my left hand. A reminder that I’m a queen. A stark reminder that no one defined who I am or what I’m becoming.

7. And another one for Africa’s Louboutin Queen

The seventh tattoo was inspired by my love for Christian Louboutin shoes. It was done in red and black. A beauty.

8. Self-Love

The eighth tattoo was on my right hand’s ring finger. It was letter S next to a heart. A reminder that the best love is the one you give yourself. Love yourselves, boys and girls!

9. Of growth and butterflies

The ninth one was a butterfly on my neck rather hidden behind the mop of hair. Hi Kendrick Lamar fans?

butterly

The tattoo is symbolic of growth. From the egg, the larvae, the pupae and into the colorful butterfly.

Growth makes you beautiful.

10. Branding myself

The tenth tattoo is of my logo. A lion face done in white. A reminder that I’m feisty and brave and powerful. Forever.

A life update: Launching my Luxury line and selling my Closet

Most people know the story of my life. I will not try to say that I have not been lucky.

I have been lucky to meet a smattering of good people over the years. People who have impacted my life in ways I cannot even begin to explain.

I have been lucky for the chance to enjoy this space. To write. To film. To talk. To express my self and bare my soul and most recently to be part of an un-folding dream.

I grew up humble. I was not exactly Cinderella because I never found that glass slipper until I was way up in my twenties.

And even then, it was a Louis Vuitton bag.

But then again, I hit the high road and I have been super lucky to have been in and out of special soles- I guess this version of Cinderella 2.0 was not content with a single pair of kicks.

For the last three years, I have been on this space, creating and dreaming. On those times when the writers block hit, I would be on Youtube, regaling you with the latest in hauls and all that shebang.

And now, I’m super delighted to share with you, the latest from my end.

I launched the newest baby from the Sonal Maherali & Co- a luxury line that is really, a journey of my African belonging.

See these bits from our store:

I made official communication after the launch about it and you can read it here.

At the same time, I launched another baby- Closet SM where I will be selling pieces off my closet that I no longer wear.

Look out for the shoes, the bags, the tops, the dresses and all that shebang on closetsm.com.

As always,

Love and Lite.

How to wear, charm and style your Saree like a boss

Wearing a Saree is an art. Like sculpting or cooking. Only that in this case, your body is the canvas, and the 9-yard cloth is your brush.

And just like painting, there are a dozen ways to wear your saree and today, I request your  unbridled attention to pester you with my favorite.

With that said, lets go painting. Shall we?

So, I learnt how to wear my first Saree from my mother and over time,  I caught on, and with lots of practice, got better at it, 9 yards at a time.

So let’s get into into how I do it.

1. To start you off, you need a petticoat, a blouse, a couple of safety pins and and the Saree. I got my petticoat and blouse from my tailor which is easy because they were tailored for my body.

Hack 1: Always wear your shoes- heels are preffered- before you start the intricate draping.

Hack 2: The part of the cloth that has the embroidery (non-pallu) on the bottom should be the wrap-around. The part that is fully embroidered goes over your shoulder.

Hack 3: A chiffon or a georgette saree with a thin border works best because of its form-fitting texture.

2. Wear your petticoat below the belly bottom and wrap the non-bordered Saree around you waistline, while tucking it into the tight petticoat

3. Take the remaining part of the saree and toss it around your waist like the initial round, except you need to do the tuck at least above four or five inches from the first one. Leave a bit of length which you will use to make pleats.

4 . Hold your second wrap-around securely below your waist with a safety pin.

5. Now, make pleats on the front and in the process fold the saree near the left waist to show the border in an extra pleat, hold the pleats into place with a safety pin then tuck the pleats in the center.

6. Hold the pallu end , bring it over the bosom under arms and take the short end over the right shoulder from front to back and secure it with a pin

You can now twirl around and step out like the enchantress you were always meant to be.

Or at least, like I did:

But that’s pretty basic right? There is a twist to it. I paired it with a matching blazer and a belt while using the Pallu end as my scarf.

A Cult Beauty makeup and skincare haul

It’s been a minute since we got down to a skin-care haul eh?

I recently picked up a few items off Cult beauty and to say that I have not been fiddling with, and looking forward to using them would be a flying understatement.

And because we decided 2019 is not the year we waste time, lets dive into into the gems I picked:

A Huda Beauty Rose Gold eyeshadow pallete

With over 18 different shades to pick from, this will leave you feeling like a kid in a candy store- and thereafter, leave you looking like candy!

Huda Beauty overachiever concealer

Although I’m not very big on Huda Beauty foundation, I’m super curious about trying out their overachiever concealer.

I will share the looks either on Instagram or on the channel. Stay tuned.

Laura Mercier Translucent setting powder

This is like stardust. I use it to set my under eye make-up and I’m blown away every time.

The powder is formulated from micro-refined silica which in effect masks those blemishes and wrinkles leaving you looking like you took a dip in the elixir of life.

And you probably did.

I also got  Huda Beauty easy bake setting powder  in poundcake,  a better-than-sex-mascara for the (afflicted) sisters- so that you can at least lay something. Haha, glitter and glow liquid eye shadows in three shades and a setting spray by Morphe.

Makeup

In no particular order: Huda Beauty Rose Gold Remastered eyeshadow Palette, Huda Beauty Easy Bake powder, Laura Mercier Translucent setting powder, Morphe Setting spray, NYX Can’t Stop Wont Stop Foundation and Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro series kit.

The haul also included a Dr Dennis sunblock. Vouched as a sunscreen that will undo signs of skin damage with its anti-aging factors, and  combines that with its ability to lighten dark spots.

Dr Dennis 1

The sun block from Dr Dennis that I cant wait to put on my face.

And for the first time, I will get to try a Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic+ Retinol wrinkle recovery peel that has some mad reviews across the interweb. I will sharing mine in the coming days.

Dennis Gross Ferulic Retinol peel satchets

Dennis Gross Ferulic Retinol peel satchets vouched as the best way to super-charge your anti-aging regimen.

To go with it, is a Ferulic+retinol eye cream below:

And a wrinkle recovery overnight serum,  which although not cheap is worth your every lira,  judging from the reviews,

Your girl also got two sets of brushes from Morphe; One,  The Eye Master Collection eye brushes which is a collaboration between Morphe and Jaclyn Hill.  And two, a set of five complexion brushes from The Complexion Master Collection.

The duo is quaint and eye-catching and I hope its as easy on the face as it is on the eyes.

Brushes

The quaint brushes; forged off a collaboration between Morphe and Jaclyn Hill.

Lastly, I got the Pixi Glow Tonic , praised as a cult classic that will leave your skin radiant, beautiful and soft by dissolving the dead cells on your skin’s surface.

Take my money, Pixi!

A Pixi glow tonic and a mud cleanser to go with it.

As usual, please head over to my Youtube channel for a more in-depth haul and do not forget to leave your nice (ish) comments.

Nude affairs

Here i am at 34 weeks and 4 days heavily pregnant with baby no.4

Im excited yet emotional as time gets closer to loose the bump and finally hold my fourth angel in my arms.

I have loved being pregnant this time just as the last three times.

It shocks some when i say i love being pregnant. But i also know the not such great things about pregnancy and its hards for some moms more than others.

I fell blessed for another healthy pregnancy and to be honest have totally loved the journey to motherhood again.

MAC Cosmetics Kenya invited me to their Garden City store launch yesterday and the makeup lover that i am i had to attend and be part of all the MAC Trends.

Thank you MAC for the invite i had a great time with all the makeup artists and guests.

Here is what i wore.

A nude long “Isa” dress/gown that i totally love and can’t get enough of.

Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian both have worn this same exact dress and now you know why.

There is nothing as luxurious as this. It feels super soft on the skin and i assure you very comfortable.

Comfort is key at this stage of pregnancy.

This dress is so versatile and can be worn both dressed up and down for a laid back relaxed look.

Its also useful during and after pregnancy so ill be sure to be keeping this one in my closet.

Maternity clothes are expensive. I suggest buying key pieces in neutral colours to pull you through.

One can always accessorise plain tops and dresses and bring out the glam.

This is how i wore mine.

Rachel Pally- Isa Dress

Louis Vuitton for Louboutin Bag

Gucci Pumps

Tory Burch Earings and cuff
